Dr Daren Bowyer was appointed to the new role of Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Principal in February 2018. Before joining Cumberland Lodge, he was Chief Executive of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society, and he directed the Berkshire Show.
Prior to that, after a long career in the British Army (including serving in Afghanistan and at the British Embassy, Washington), Daren held the posts of Director of the Sandhurst Trust, and Home Bursar of Pembroke College, Oxford.
Daren studied Philosophy at Bristol University, International Relations at Cambridge, and holds a PhD in Strategic Studies and Military Ethics from Cranfield University. Daren is County Commandant of the Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force, Vice-Chairman of the science education charity OIBC and was until recently, a judge for the Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards.
Can Military Leadership be Applied to Business?
Daren Bowyer was an Army officer for 26 years and has since held a number of senior leadership roles in the education and charity sectors. Today he is COO of Cumberland Lodge, an educational charity and residential conference centre occupying a former Royal residence in the heart of Windsor Great Park. Having led teams, large and small, across a range of disciplines he strongly believes that the military approach to leadership – values based, transformational and focussing on the interlocking needs of Task Team and Individual – is as valid in the boardroom as it is on the battlefield.
