Phil Southall is the Managing Director of Oxford Bus Company and its sister companies Thames Travel, Carousel Buses and City Sightseeing Oxford – all subsidiaries of Go-Ahead Group PLC.
Phil has worked in the transport industry for over 20 years across a variety of operational, commercial and service delivery roles in Staffordshire, Lancashire and the North East of England, in addition to Oxfordshire where he has been since 2012.
His leadership has seen Oxford Bus Company achieve 96% customer satisfaction for the iconic Park and Ride service, as well as putting the company at the centre of many technological and environmental initiatives such as large solar installations, hybrid and emissions technologies, and demand-responsive transport solutions.
Phil believes the level of innovation taking place in Oxfordshire presents exciting opportunities for public transport solutions, so the Oxford Bus Company can continue to play its part in supporting the growth of Oxfordshire in the coming years.
Demand Responsive Transport and Future Mobility
Demand responsive transport is almost certainly going to play an important role in future mobility solutions. Whilst not a silver bullet, it has the potential to effectively complement traditional public transport in an efficient and cost-effective way. It’s far from simple though – the technology behind it is still in its infancy and requires significant work to set up and operate. Furthermore, commercial partnerships are critical to its viability as operational and regulatory overheads remain high – almost as high as those of a regular bus service. Despite these challenges, our trial in Oxford is showing positive signs and we’re excited about its future.
